TMJ Treatment

TMJ/TMD and Your Bite

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint that connects the lower jaw. Considered to be the most used joint in the body, our TMJ allows us to chew, talk and even yawn.

Unfortunately, this joint doesn’t always function as it should, resulting in pain and discomfort for many people each year. When serious dysfunction occurs, it is called TMD, or temporomandibular disorder.

Having a good bite is essential. Your bite not only affects your smile, but it also helps ward off adverse effects and health conditions.

An unhealthy bite can cause strain on the jaw and mouth, making you more susceptible to conditions such as TMD. There are various symptoms used to diagnose a bad bite. These include straining of the jaw and difficulty chewing. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to let our orthodontic team know before any procedure begins.
